Why should the ISO file have to match my physical computer's hardware exactly? Isn't the point of VMware to be able to run any OS without needing to install it to the physcial PC, which means not having the exact hardware specifications? I made sure that the.VMX file had the allocated memory size of 128 MB RAM, and my physical machine has 512 MB, so that shouldn't be the problem. The problem with the XP setup on the VMware Player is that the bootable ISO doesn't detect a harddrive for installation, but recognizes all the other hardware that my physical machine has.

I think it can't detect it because VMware player makes it so it doesn't need to install to a physcial drive which is what it is looking for, but for some reason it is still looking to install to a physical HDD instead of the virtual one that VMware player made. Anyone know why the setup on the ISO is giving me that harddrive problem? Not sure about VMWare Player but you can do it with Microsoft's free Virtual PC program and with VirtualBox - I can recommend VirtualBox, it's fast and also free - a Google search will find them. BTW I don't think the real (host) PC's hardware matters here, the install is just like a normal XP install from CD, only the needed drivers are loaded and they are for the 'virtual' hardware that's simulated on the Virtual (Client) Machine. Just found this, looks like you can do this with VMWare Player but it seems quite complex.
