I bought this for my 5 year old for Christmas and she loves it. It was the greatest gift by far that she got. She plays it all the time and I know I saw was recommended for 8 and up. But she has been jamming out with her guitar since we put the batteries in it.

So I think because there is no small parts and your child is below the recommended age it will still be a good gift for I would say 5 and up and for the price if it gets broke you are not out a ton of money like you would if you bought the real one. My 13 year old wants one now too.
